House: Days 2 and 3

Last night, we made some good progress on the wallpaper, with Aimee discovering some new techniques that made getting it off a lot easier. We finished the biggest wall, and nearly all of the walls (and ceiling; yes, they wallpapered part of the ceiling) around the breakfast nook, putting us at about halfway done with the living room.

This morning, I got to the house at 7:30, after a stop at the Anawalt on Pico to restock on wallpaper removal solution; I bought it in bulk concentrated form this time. I met our tile guy Jose, who quickly got started demolishing the ugly bathroom. A few minutes later, the guys from Sunset Glass showed up, and made quick work of the floor-to-ceiling mirrors that were our other least favorite thing about the house. One fell swoopThe walls are now covered in a few dozen patched of black adhesive, or, where the adhesive stay with the mirror, spots of missing sheetrock. It’s so much better, even with the big spots. I got some more paper removed this morning before heading off to work in the rain; bad traffic mad the trip take an hour, which is not encouraging, but rain shuts down traffic in L.A. like nobody’s business, so I hope for a smoother commute on sunny days.

Aimee stopped by during lunch, made possible by her now five-minute commute, which she thoroughly deserves after years of driving miles to work, whether in Boston, Rochester, or here. We hope to get all of the wallpaper down by the end of the weekend, and move on to painting next week. I’m going to buy the tile for our bathroom tomorrow morning, and hopefully the work Jose is doing there will be done by the middle of next week. Very exciting.
