50 States: Florida (37)

50 States: Florida

Florida was the one coastal southern state we missed on our 1997 road trip; we couldn’t hit them all, and it was a little too much out of our way to swing all the way down. Besides, the car, which has been purchased specifically for the trip (buy a car, drive it across the county, and sell it in Alaska – a wise idea?) had come from Florida originally, so we felt it had already had a taste of the state.

My first visit to Florida was an odd little trip that George and I took in March of 2003 to see a Red Sox spring training game in Fort Myers. The game was fun, and we hung out on the beach, but it was a strange, hot weekend, that’s about all I remember. The next, and only other, time I’ve visited Florida was for Abby and Dave’s wedding in Sarasota, in the fall of 2004. The photo above is from that weekend, as Jack and I played on the beach. The weekend was a lot of fun, and a little strange because it was just before the 2004 presidential election, and I remember counting competing signs around town, as we were in a state whose electoral votes were actually up for grabs, unlike Massachusetts’.

I still want to visit Miami, the last major American city I’ve never been to, and we’ve got a Rays game and a Marlins game that we need to catch at some point to round out the baseball parks.
