And so, in 2001, we leave the era of the photochemical photograph, never to return. The glasses are back, and there’s a weird attempt at long sideburns, plus this pseudo turtleneck that began unraveling the day I bought it.

The first digital photograph in this project, this picture was taken after midnight on the morning of October 7, 2001 (thanks, EXIF data) at Grendel’s Den in Cambridge.

My roommates Cosby, Tim, and Josh were there, as well as Mari, Jess, Amanda, and Aimee, whom I’d met the year before. In that brief interlude between the introduction of the digital camera and the advent of cell phone cameras, it wasn’t every night out that someone brought a camera to document the evening, so even though it’s a digital photo, it’s still a fairly scarce document from this era.

These were the years when we were going out a few nights a week, to Grendel’s, the Field, People’s Republik, River Gods, Bukowski’s, the Enormous Room, Miracle of Science, B-Side Lounge, and so on…
