50 States: South Dakota

South Dakota is a tough state to pick a photo for; in the end, I went with the slightly predictable Mt. Rushmore, simply because after half a dozen road trips, Aimee and I finally bit the bullet and forked over half a day to visit the place, and came away actually impressed, pleasantly surprised that the sight had lived up to the hype. We arrived early in the morning, before the crowds became too much, and we really enjoyed looking at it, learning about it, scrambling around below it – it really is a remarkable place.

That said, South Dakota is home to a host of other wondrous things to see, from the ridiculous to the sublime (in order): Wall Drug, the Corn Palace in Mitchell, Crazy Horse, and the Badlands, all of which I’ve visited a few times now over the years. Well done, South Dakota.

Forty down, ten to go.
