Futuristic weekend

The deck

We spent the bulk of the weekend getting our deck ready, by finally assembling the (Vietnamese) Adirondack chairs, and by buying and building a grill and a table, so we are now officially prepared for a summer of barbeque and lounging on the deck while sipping mojitos, or something.

Angelino HeightsSaturday, we took a tour of Echo Park and Angelino Heights, home to some stunning Victorian homes. It would be great to go inside some of the homes, I’m sure, and we came across a couple of L.A. Conservancy walking tours in the neighborhood, doing just that, so we’ll have to take one of those tours one day. More photos from the walk here.

We also tried stopping by the 826LA Time Travel Mart, but we were either too early, or too late; as they say, we’ll have to come back yesterday, when it will be open.

The digital 3-D IMAX spectacle of U2 3D had been beckoning to me for awhile, so we headed to Universal City Walk to the AMC 16 to catch the movie last night. The movie was great, but more spectacular than the film itself was the scene at Universal City Walk – what a zoo! We’d never been there at night, and it seemed like everyone between 16 and 24 in the entire L.A. area was there, dancing, drinking, taking cell phone pictures, bowling, going to the movies… Two sightings that confirmed for me that we are living in the future: first, a Dyson airblade hand dryer, which was, frankly, a revolutionary experience:

…and second, the fascinating “indoor skydiving” demonstration that was going on between the movie theater and the parking lot, where two guys bounced and jumped and flew up, down, and around inside a tall glass chamber, propelled up and held aloft by a powerful fan from below. Pretty fun to watch.
