This weekend saw a busy whirlwind of activity, beginning on Thursday with the arrival of my parents and my introduction of a screening of The Lost Weekend on the 100th anniversary of the birth of Billy Wilder, which was a nice event. The next day, Aimee had her last day at work and we had the official graduation ceremony, where we all got our degrees and I delivered a commencement address on behlaf of my fellow students – shades of the Sullivan Arena and high school graduation, May 1993, only with less pretension, I hope – and I officially received my fellowship awards. We were the tenth graduating class, and a reunion coincided with the graduation, so I saw some familiar faces, met new people, and introduced myself to some of my colleagues-to-be who were out from Los Angeles.
After a reception, Aimee and I hosted classmates and their families for a dessert and cocktail party at our apartment, one last hurrah before we pack it all up. On Saturday, we enjoyed a cruise on the Genesee River and Erie Canal with the whole reunion crew, followed by a screening of The Birds. Sunday, I took Aimee to the airport for a flight out to LA for an interview, and then headed back home. In the afternoon, things wound down with a screening of some rare shorts, and I took my parents to the airport, and returned for another film… Now it’s on to the serious business of packing the whole house in the next four days.
Another graduation
