The big move, part two

October 14th, 2013 · No Comments

After three months, we finally completed the second stage of our major, two-stage cross-country move this week. Back in July, we packed up the house in L.A. and had everything moved to Aimee’s parents’ place in Rhode Island, where it sat in the garage as we searched for a house in New Haven and surroundings. We moved quickly and found a great house, but even with our decisive work, it still took months for the deal to close, for the owner to move out, for the necessary pre-move in work to be done, and for us to move in. So now, as I approach my three-month anniversary of the first day of work here tomorrow, we can now say that we, and all of our stuff, are where we’re going to be for awhile.

The move itself went well, and the movers even managed to bring the photobooth along with them and deposit it in the garage in our new house, saving me a trip dedicated to the booth, complete with piano dollies and J-Bars and all the rest of the necessary equipment. The house was nice when we looked at it, but with three weeks of work before we moved in, it’s turning out to be a really great house. The new and newly uncovered hardwood floors and the paint instead of wallpaper in our three bedrooms made a world of difference. The rest of the work we’d like to do will take some time, but it’s certainly fit for living in now. Having the space to properly unpack is a nice luxury we’ve never really had before, either, so we’re able to deal with the boxes we want to and leave the rest in the formal living room, which no one was trying to use anyway.

The girls seem to enjoy the house so far. Grace loves her room and her new big girl bed, while Lucy loves crawling on the wood floors in search of something else to put in her mouth. Scott and his family were here for the weekend, and we took our first trip on the woodland trail that starts across the street from our house. I can’t believe how lucky we are to have that, just a few feet from the house. Now we just need to unpack the rest of the boxes, some of which haven’t seen the light of day since Rochester, and figure out which light switch controls what light. So many light switches…
