Regency Bruin Snow White and the Huntsman Monday, 6/4/12, 7:30 pm

Price: $11.50 Concessions: None. Audience: About 40 people, in a theater that seats nearly 700. Trailers/advertising: Trailers for The Amazing Spider-Man, That’s My Boy, Rock of Ages (enough already), Total Recall, The Dark Knight Rises, and The Bourne Legacy. Then an ad for THX, and the movie began. Projection: 35mm platter

The other landmark (lower case) theater in Westwood, the Bruin is across the street from the premiere-magnet that is the Village, which, true to form, was hosting a premiere tonight. I had a little trouble finding parking, and when I got out of my car and walked half a block, I found out why: a red carpet, blocked off streets, limos, dwarves in fancy clothes – it’s an Adam Sandler premiere! That’s My Boy was having its grand unveiling, and the streets were packed with press and onlookers. I saw Mr. Sandler signing autographs as I went in to buy my tickets, and spotted Akiva Schaffer, one third of Samberg’s Lonely Island cohort.

I wasn’t really looking forward to the film, and only decided to go because I’ve been waiting years to see something in this theater, and Ebert had a few kind words for the film in his review. Again, I was actually pleasantly surprised. It was more interesting and even thoughtful than I expected it would be. Whoever cast the dwarves gets the prize: it’s a who’s who of great British character actors. For some reason it took me a second to put two and two together and realize oh yes, these are those dwarves, the seven dwarves… Anyway, it wasn’t half bad. One more night to go.
