50 States: Wisconsin

We’ve found a lot to love about Wisconsin over the years, from the charm of downtown Madison to the beauty of Miller Park in Milwaukee, to the Mustard Museum in Mount Horeb.

My first trip to Wisconsin was during my 1998 road trip, the occasion of my first visit to the endless halls of the House on the Rock, definitely one of the great wonders of roadside America. Our 2003 baseball roadtrip brought Aimee and me to Milwaukee, where stopped for a Brewers game, and then, after heading to Minneapolis for a Twins game, we returned through Wisconsin and stopped in Spring Green for my second visit to the House on the Rock, where Aimee and I took this photo in the Infinity Room.

Our last visit to Wisconsin came during our second cross-country trip out to L.A. in 2006, when we spent a little more quality time in the state. We crossed into Wisconsin from Iowa and stopped at the stopped at the awe-inspiring Dickeyville Grotto and the aforementioned Mustard Museum, where we picked up a few choice mustards for home and filled up on sample mustards and breadsticks. We enjoyed a nice afternoon and evening in Madison, and then barreled full speed into the tourist trap that is the Wisconsin Dells, which we’d always wanted to investigate.

We visited the Wonder Spot and played a round of mini-golf, but it was, as expected, all a bit much, so we headed on before it got too crowded.

The map continues to fill up.
