Nineteen years

It still seems slightly amazing that I can remember anything that happened nearly twenty years ago, but I guess I’m not in my twenties anymore, so I should stop being surprised. It’s Brent’s birthday today (he’s not in his twenties, either), and the combination of that event and the ubiquitous advertising announcing the return of Indiana Jones has made me think about the last Indy film, released on May 24, 1989, whose opening night at the Fireweed Theater in Anchorage was the site of a sweet birthday party to celebrate Brent’s big 14th.

Pizza beforehand – Sorrento’s, if I remember? – across the street, and then we all headed into the Fireweed’s biggest theater, home of undoubtedly the biggest screen in Alaska, and enjoyed the adventure. Almost more memorable than the movie itself was the sonic event that was the presentation of the THX logo – “The Audience is Listening”; I know that wasn’t the first time I’d seen it, but it certainly was the first time I heard it that loud, that low, that impressive. Happy Birthday, Brent – I think I know which one of you has aged better.
