Ups and downs

The good news is that my hard drive might be able to be rescued; the bad news is that my computer is dead, and dead to the tune of a $1000 repair fee, which I’ll be forgoing in favor of an altogether new computer. I still feel like mine is a new computer; I hadn’t planned on buying another iMac less than two years after buying the first one.

In other news, physical therapy is going well, lots of funny little exercises, ultrasonic massage with ibuprofen-infused goo, and all sorts of other stuff. I’m getting to know the Hollywood-to-Santa Monica commute, which is not fun, but it’s quality time with the car radio/cdplayer/ipod, which is still novel. It’s now been almost a month since I’ve done any running, and hopefully the exercise and rest will combine to heal my foot so I can get going at the end of the month.

And in other, other news, our hot water is still not working properly (riveting stuff, I know), so showering is a delicate operation that involves turning on the kitchen sink in order to jar the hot water heater into heating the water in the shower. Our misadventures in plumbing repair continue, as no one at our landlady’s plumber of choice seems to know either what to do, when to show up, or whom to call when confirming an appointment. So we end up with people coming over who don’t know what they’re doing, people coming over who do know but can’t see it in the dark, or people calling Aimee at work to confirm an appointment I’m at home waiting for. It’s pretty awesome; it’s been going on since February 26th, and I hope to keep it up for another few weeks.

On Tuesday, we had a slow start at trivia night, but thanks to a miraculous five out of ten on identifying U.S. Army ranks from their insignias (thanks, MAS*H) and a strong finish (Aimee somehow knew that SpongeBob’s buddy was named Patrick, and we figured out that Godzilla fought Rodan and Ghidorah but not Gargantua), we came back and took third. We’ve got high hopes for next week, especially if the team that won this week slims down from the 11 or so people they had this week. It’s not really a trivia quiz at that point, it’s more like ‘go around the circle until someone has the answer.’

Michael and I went to the Dresden last night for some quality time with Marty and Elayne, which is always a good time. We ran into a bunch of folks from work at Fred 62 for dinner, which might count as the first time I’ve unexpectedly run into anybody I know in L.A. We’re looking forward to a relaxing weekend of nothing this weekend.
