Rainy Ramble

April 24th, 2005 · No Comments

For my return to running after a six-month post-marathon hiatus, I chose the 22nd Annual James Joyce Ramble 10K in Dedham, famous for the actors and others who read passages from Joyce’s work as the runners go by. The rain that came on Saturday stayed this morning, and a light drizzle turned into a downpour just as we started off. It actually helped keep everyone cool, and seemed to reduce the need for water along the course. Having only ever done one other 10k almost four years ago, I wasn’t sure how to plan for the distance. I ended up feeling fine, though completely soaked through. The course was mostly flat, and featured a nice route through the campus of Nobles, as well as downtown Dedham. The volunteers reading to us were terrific, though in a setting like that, you can only really catch a few words at a time (especially if it’s Gaelic): “The door opened and…” or “…and what he meant by that was…” or my favorite, “He apologized for the disorderly room…” The thousands of gallons of free Harpoon beer at the end of the day was a plus, as well.
