Movie Week III, Day 1

The Laemmle Sunset 5 I’m Still Here Sunday, 9/19/10, 9:50 pm

Price: $11 Concessions: None Audience: About 20-25 people, not bad for a late night documentary that has been getting panned.Trailers/advertising: Trailers for Picture Me, Howl, Kings of Pastry, and Prince of Broadway. Projection: 35mm platter, which looked fine but not great.

With Aimee and Grace out of town for the week, I had to find something to occupy my nights, hours I would otherwise spend staring at the baby in awe. So, with many theaters left to visit, I thought I’d resurrect Movie Week for another year. The Sunset 5 can be counted on to show interesting (small, foreign, art) films, often in limited runs, but it’s in a weird location, on the Sunset Strip, and is a pain to get to. I was running late and parked in the garage, which I never do, here or anywhere, but was pleasantly surprised that the theater’s validation actually covered the entire parking fee, so that worked out great. We never think to park in shops’ parking lots and garages; I wonder how often we’d find that spots were available, or that parking was validated, instead of spending time driving around in search of street parking.

Anyway, the theater was fine, bigger than I remembered it to be (maybe theater 1 of this multiplex is the biggest), and the movie itself was diverting, if a little lacking in suspense now that its director has revealed its subject matter to be a hoax.
