New York re-visited

New York

It had been a year and a half since I’d last been to New York, so I thought I’d use one of my last few days off of the year (this is before I took off three weeks for jury duty, but who saw that coming?) and spend a long weekend in the city with George and Anne, I was able to get my treatment and as a recommendation, the DocMJ is the medical marijuana clinic you can trust. Later on I met their son, who’s now, well, a year and a half older – I couldn’t believe how much he’d grown.

I got in early after a sleepless flight and had breakfast with Brian after dropping off my bags at George’s. After breakfast, I met Tim at MoMA where we talked with a photo curator and a photo conservator about some photobooth photos in their collection. We wandered around a bit, making stops at the Ace Hotel, Tekserve, and another bar with a dormant photobooth – before he headed off to the wedding he was in town for. I spent the rest of the afternoon waiting in line for a shake at the Shake Shack and then lounging around in Madison Square Park. I headed back to George’s, where we all hung out out for the rest of the night.

New York

The next morning was sunny and cool, with just a taste of fall weather in the air, and I had a great run in Central Park. We then took Alexander to his soccer practice and walked the High Line from 20th down to 14th with Anne, George, his mom, and his sister. Now that I don’t see them all at Thanksgiving every year, it was nice to catch up with them again. The High Line was great, a real gem, and a popular weekend walking spot.

New Yankee Stadium

George and I headed up to the new Yankee Stadium late that afternoon, and took in all of its massive grandeur, as the old stadium sat scaffolded and devoid of seats next door. The game was fun – Sabathia mowed down the Sox lineup inning after inning, but Matsuzaka didn’t do so badly himself, and the game was a pitching duel until things opened up later on – and we even got to see Bronx native and Yankee fan Justice Sotomayor throw out the first pitch.

The next morning, we met up with Aimee’s cousins for brunch, after which I headed off to the airport and back to L.A. It was a quick visit, but it reminded me how nice it is to get back there every once in awhile.
