It might get warm

A quick update on our weekend, before I settle into my first full week of jury duty: I went for a six mile run Saturday morning, finally starting to stretch things out a little from my normal daily routine, as I eye some fall mountain races and a February half-marathon.

L.A. Printers Fair 2009

After that, I headed down to Carson for the first-ever Los Angeles Printers Fair at the International Printing Museum, which I’ve visited a few times now for tours and classes. The fair was a nice event, and looked like lots of fun for people who actually own presses and can do stuff; for me, it just fed my desire to get a press and start working. Maybe I’ll have one before the next fair, and I can make better use of the wares on offer. More photos from the fair here.

We had a quiet rest of the day, and I started to make my way through the raft of Peter Sellers movies I TiVo’ed on TCM the day before. Whether it goes by Your Past Is Showing or The Naked Truth, the film I watched, with Sellers and Terry-Thomas, was almost a blueprint for the later Clouseau films, with Sellers running around in hilarious disguises accompanied by amazing accents.

Kenneth Hahn Park Walk for Health

Today, we got up early to avoid the ridiculous heat and went for a hike, more like a walk, in Kenneth Hahn Park, which we always used to pass on La Cienega as we headed toward the airport. It’s an impressive swath of green space, surrounded by roads, oil fields, and the city in general. It was tough to make out much on the horizon thanks to the heavy smoke that is billowing above the city. More photos from the hike here.

After the hike, I headed into Hollywood for brunch at Grub with my best friend from the seventh grade, Paul, whom I hadn’t seen since one afternoon in 1994 when we met at Amherst; before then, I hadn’t seen him since 1989. So it’s really been 20 years, and it was great to catch up. Thanks, Facebook.

I went into work for a few hours to take care of some stuff and get things straightened out before my leave of absence for the next month – I still can’t believe I won’t be going in every day, and instead will be doodling in a notebook (don’t worry, it’s the way I pay attention the best) in a courtroom in Santa Monica. We topped off the evening with a screening of It Might Get Loud, which was thoroughly enjoyable: a look at the electric guitar through the music and lives of Jimmy Page, the Edge, and Jack White. Great footage, terrific stories, and masterful editing.
