The film was released more than six months ago, won its Oscars three months ago, came out on standard-def DVD two months ago, and Blu-ray on Tuesday; I wonder, what exactly are they waiting for? I love the fact that this giant banner is still up, and when you drive down Hollywood Boulevard at night into the scummy/touristy nexus of lingerie shops, lines of people outside dance clubs, Musso & Frank’s, and the walk of fame, you see Daniel Plainview and the towering inferno illuminated before you. I just don’t understand why. Isn’t that wall valuable real estate? Did someone just forget? Or is P.T. Anderson personally funding its abnormally long display life? Perhaps I shouldn’t ask; it’ll probably disappear tomorrow.
