From Franklin to Venice

Franklin Canyon

We took advantage of the return of the sunny weekend with a couple of outdoor adventures this weekend, first in the heretofore unknown Franklin Canyon, a great hiking spot nestled between Studio City and Beverly Hills. We missed the Faery Hunt that was going on while we were there, but we did enjoy a two-hour hike through woods and hillsides, and up to a summit with a view of Century City and Santa Monica. It was L.A., of course, so we passed former Disney CEO Michael Eisner on our way up the hill. Photos of the hike here.

Yesterday, we headed out to Venice to visit the canals; it was something I did on my first day in Los Angeles in 2006, but Aimee had never visited the area, and I didn’t know much about them. We really enjoyed the walk, and couldn’t believe how serene and quiet the area is, all of those unique houses backing onto quiet canals in the middle of Los Angeles. Well, not quite Los Angeles, but it certainly isn’t far from everything, and the feeling of seclusion is pretty incredible.

Venice

We walked around for a few hours, stopped by the unique car rental shop, grabbed a cold drink at Abbot’s Habit, and had a nice morning. More photos here.

I went to my first film at the new Cinefamily @ The Silent Movie Theatre, some Sunday afternoon noir; too bad I saw the film last year and didn’t remember it by name. That’s what I get for 200 movies a year. Oh well, it was fun to see again, and the theater was really nice, good sight lines with every third seat removed and replaced with an end-table, a great idea. Next time, I’ll have to get a cupcake – they looked pretty tempting.

Trivia tomorrow night, and maybe we can recover from last week’s debacle; it was pretty much my fault, as I failed at the one thing I had actually tried, consciously, to do, albeit eight or nine months ago: memorize the names of the first ten presidents. Doesn’t sound that hard, but I didn’t do it, and we blew the last round. Oh well. The week before, on New Year’s Day, we were eight people in a field of only six or seven other teams, so we split into two teams of four, and ended up coming in first and third. We’ll see how it goes this week. Off to Anchorage on Friday night for a three-day weekend, which will be fun.
