What, No Theremin?

Thanks to an early wedding present from Stephanie and Andrew, we went to the second sold out Müm show in the courtyard at the MFA last night. The setup was unexpected and very nice, lots of kids sitting on the grass and the band on a concrete step in front of a wall of ivy, their stage littered with instruments. It was a gorgeous evening that brought nice temperatures and even some stargazing. Stephanie had arranged for table seating, so we got to watch from a nice spot at the front, a great vantage point for seeing the band as well as the guy who must have been at the wrong show, and inexplicably took off his shirt as the night got colder.

The six members of the band played what must have numbered at least twenty-five or thirty different instruments over the course of an hour and a half. Guitar, bass, violin, drums, keyboard? Check. Saw, accordion, weird amplified violin, toy keyboard? Yep. A dozen synthesizers, a tiny squeezebox, vibes, and handbells? Definitely. They were multi-talented and mostly quiet, when they weren’t playing, that is. The lead singer curtsied adorably after each song, and her tiny, breathy, pixie-ish voice actually worked ouside the studio environment, which surprised me.

I only recognized three of their songs, the three I used in the DVD of my Iceland footage I just finished yesterday. It’s my first foray into using the DV camera, iMovie, and iDVD, all at once, and it turned out ok. I need better footage, Final Cut Express, and more DVD-Rs now, but I’ve learned some valuable lessons along the way.
