The Mob, the FBI, and Project X

In my weekly round-up of new trailers on Apple’s Trailers site, I watched a preview for the new Matthew Broderick film The Last Shot. As soon as I started watching it, I rembered where I’d heard the story before: This American Life. In the mis-named and otherwise somewhat underwhelming 2003 episode “MacGyver,” GQ writer Elizabeth Gilbert tells the story of an FBI-financed movie production, used as a front for a sting operation on the Boston mob, that almost ended up producing an actual movie. If Bebe Neuwirth and John Lithgow audition, that’s almost a real movie, however unappealing it sounds, right? Who knows how the Broderick/Alec Baldwin/Tony Shalhoub movie based on this faux-movie will turn out, but give a listen to the TAL story. It’s really fascinating, and gives some good background on the now nearly dormant Boston big-budget filmmaking scene.
