Never a dull moment

I was in the middle of a post about our fun weekend – brunch at John O’ Groats (where I had the famous “Huevos O’Groats”), a documentary seminar in honor of Pare Lorentz, a screening of the surprisingly solid Gone Baby Gone, and the amazing Ian McKellen as King Lear at UCLA…and that was just Sunday! – but then last night, we were informed that we have to move out of our apartment and find a new home, as soon as we are able to. So, that’s sort of on the front burner now, and we’re starting to think about looking around, packing everything up again, and moving, for the umpteenth year in a row.

We were pretty set on not moving for a bunch of years, staying in our nice little place until we left the area and moved somewhere permanent, but it looks like that’s not going to happen. We’re both trying to maintain a good attitude about it, and it helps that neither of us lets the other wallow in the frustration this news has caused, but it’s a hassle, no matter how you look at it. We’re pretty certain we’d like to try and stay in the same area, if not the same neighborhood, but I’ve only ever moved in the summer, and I’ll be interested to see what kind of market there is for a mid-Fall or Winter move. It’ll certainly be cooler, which is nice, and hopefully we won’t be moving far, but the act of moving was nicely fading from our memories right about now, and it’s not a welcome sensation to have return.

On the bright side, our house is not engulfed in an awful firestorm, as so many in the Southern California area are, and we’re not being forced out by the end of the month, and let’s face it: we’ve got a whole lot of stuff that is still in boxes from the last move, which will make things a lot easier. Aimee has been industriously looking through Craigslist entries and seeing what some of the current options are – now we know what all of those street addresses and neighborhoods mean – and we hope to get going on things before the end of the year. We’ll have to work around our existing plans to be out of town on various weekends in November, December, January, and February, which will make things interesting. The whole thing is a bit of a shock, and makes us wish we weren’t at the mercy of someone else’s unpredictable life, but we’ll get over it. I’ll be chronicling our intra-city move as it progresses; here’s hoping it’s smooth, with a pleasant finish.
