Besides, the car, which has been purchased specifically for the trip (buy a car, drive it across the county, and sell it in Alaska &#8211; a wise idea?) had come from Florida originally, so we felt it had already had a taste of the state.  <\/p>\n<p>My first visit to Florida was an odd little trip that George and I took in March of 2003 to see a Red Sox spring training game in Fort Myers. The game was fun, and we hung out on the beach, but it was a strange, hot weekend, that&#8217;s about all I remember.  The next, and only other, time I&#8217;ve visited Florida was for Abby and Dave&#8217;s wedding in Sarasota, in the fall of 2004.  The photo above is from that weekend, as Jack and I played on the beach.  The weekend was a lot of fun, and a little strange because it was just before the 2004 presidential election, and I remember  <a title=\"  Swing State Vacation\" href=\"http:\/\/www.doubleperf.com\/blog\/archives\/2004\/10\/31\/swing_state_vacation.html\">counting competing signs<\/A> around town, as we were in a state whose electoral votes were actually up for grabs, unlike Massachusetts&#8217;.  <\/p>\n<p>I still want to visit Miami, the last major American city I&#8217;ve never been to, and we&#8217;ve got a Rays game and a Marlins game that we need to catch at some point to round out the baseball parks.  <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Florida was the one coastal southern state we missed on our 1997 road trip; we couldn&#8217;t hit them all, and it was a little too much out of our way to swing all the way down.
