It was a cause for celebration, as the new location is about ten minutes closer to work, and also because there’s really nothing else going on in that particular stretch of Cambridge Street between Inman Square and Harvard Square (besides a heck of a lot of honorary square signs).

Yesterday, amid the buckets of rain, they officially opened (perhaps their website will soon), and we headed over for lunch to mark the occasion. Though they’re in a larger space and there’s more room to stand in a long line at lunchtime, they’ve managed to maintain the loud, somewhat violent method of interaction – not in a physical way, but in a vocal way – well-established at the other location. There’s a lot of shouting and waving, but when great sandwiches are the end result, I won’t complain.

My favorite part about the new location is that they’ve gone to the trouble to translate all of their sandwiches, named for streets around their Mount Auburn St. location, to new names from streets around the new location. As I looked on the photocopied menu, I thought, Hey, the Fayette sounds good, chicken salad, diced apple, mmm. Then I realized what was going on when I spotted the chart over the sandwich-making area. Of course I like the sound of the Fayette, because, as the sign read, “The Appleton equals The Fayette. The Hubbard Park equals The Magnolia. The Longfellow equals The Quincy.” I wonder how long they’ll need that before they get used to the new names. I’m a little disappointed there’s no sandwich called The Antrim, but I’m happy to have them in the neighborhood.

A month ago, I spotted the location of the new Darwin’s getting ready to open on Cambridge Street.
