I’m making a list of songs by bands from the British Isles that borrow lyrics from songs performed by bands that didn’t exist organically but were created for television or film. Got all that? This probably doesn’t make sense, and certainly doesn’t warrant an entire list, but when I heard a second song that would fit on this list, I thought, “Hey, if there are two, there might be more.” So here goes:<\/p>\n
1. “Evening of the Day<\/a>” by Supergrass. They borrow the chorus of “All the Way Home<\/A>” by Spinal Tap, “If she?s not on the 5:19\/Then I?m gonna know what sorrow means.” Supergrass changes the time to 3:15, but is it a coincidence that the track itself comes out to 5:18 in length? Probably.<\/p>\n 2. “Big Sur<\/A>” by the Thrills. They borrow the chorus from “(Theme from) The Monkees<\/A>” by the Monkees, “Hey, hey, we’re the Monkees\/And people say we monkey around\/But we’re too busy singing\/To put anybody down.” The Thrills turn it around and sing “Hey, hey you’re the Monkees\/People said you monkeyed around, but nobody’s listening now.” <\/p>\n
