40 Days until 40: Day 2, 1976

1976Thanks to Kodak’s old-school metadata, an ink label rubber stamped on the back of the print, I know this photo was taken (or at least developed) in July, 1976, when I was one and a half. I chose it mostly because of the fence in the background, and its two-tone green aluminum privacy slats, as I’ve just learned they’re called.

I only lived in the house downtown until age six, so I don’t remember a ton about it, but the look of that fence, the way the slats slapped back into place when you pulled on them, the sound they made when hit with a ball, those are things I remember clearly. I also remember walking to Family Market to buy Whatchamacallit bars, burying things in the backyard, jumping off the jungle gym we had back there, and playing at Eric Pavey’s house across the alley behind our house. It’s all a bit of a mish-mash at this point, and I’m just going to toss in what I can recall at the moment, for lack of anything better organized.

I’m flying by the seat of my pants with this project, as I didn’t come up with the idea to do it until yesterday, and it’s dawning on me I’ll need to do this every day for the next…38, apparently. I haven’t blogged regularly in years, so I’m a little out of practice. We’ll see how it goes.
