Laemmle Monica 4 Win Win Sunday, 5/8/11, 4:55 pm

Price: $11.00 Concessions: None Audience: 40-50 people, which I thought was a not-bad showing. Trailers/advertising: Trailers for Midnight in Paris, Tree of Life, The Double Hour, The Arbor, and The Big Uneasy. Projection: 35mm platter, with no issues

This theater is new to me. I always thought I knew where the theaters down by the Third Street Promenade were located, but now that I’ve looked into it, there seem to be more theaters down there than I imagined, and this is one of them. Like the entire Laemmle chain, this theater specializes in indie and foreign fare, and I was happy to be able to catch Tom McCarthy’s new film here this afternoon. It’s safe to say the theater has seen better days. Threadbare carpets, ceiling tiles stained and falling apart, and some very uncomfortable seats that dig right into the back of your neck. That said, the projection was fine, a good, crisp 35mm image, the moviegoers were engaged and respectful, and the moviegoing experience wasn’t half bad. It didn’t hurt that the movie was great, a terrific, multi-faceted film with some excellent performances.
