We crossed the Southern Alps today, or rather, crossed below them, through the Otira Tunnel on the TranzAlpine from Christchurch this morning. It was a stunning ride, through snow-capped peaks and over deep ravines. We arrived in Greymouth, took a brewery tour, and then visited the Pancake Rocks at Punakaiki, a striking and mysterious formation of layered rocks along a rugged cliff overlooking the vast Pacific.
