Goodbye, Yankee Stadium

September 22nd, 2008 · No Comments

I watched the game and the final day festivities this morning, and it’s sad to see the place go. It was the home of my first major league baseball experience, and the park where I’ve seen the most games. I never saw a playoff game there, but those years I was living in Connecticut – 1997-2000 – were pretty amazing years to be just up the road from the Stadium. I went to a game nearly every month those summers, including the best-pitched game I ever saw, Pedro vs. Roger, May 26, 2000 (the linked page has the date wrong; I’ve still got the ticket in my wallet).

The last time I saw a game at the Stadium was in June of 2005 a hot day in the tier boxes with Scott, Mark, Josh, and George. I wish I’d been able to go again one more time, but I’ll be content with the moments I remember there – the deafening roar of the crowd, Jeter’s athleticism, Mariano’s inevitability. The photo is from a Yankees – Red Sox game in September 1999, sitting in the upper deck in right field.
