50 States: Maryland

Pennsylvania was also the state where George and I started our summer 1997 cross-country road trip, so I’ll use that entry to usher in a run-down of all of those states we visited on the trip, many of which I had never been to before.

I had visited Maryland once prior to the road trip, on a day off between sessions as an RA at CTY; I remember lots of rain, and watching Trainspotting at a suburban movie theater. The road trip visit a few years later was cursory, meriting barely a mention in the journal I kept (“…down to 95, to Baltimore, where we caught the Baltimore-Wash. Expressway (?)…” – I think I meant “Parkway”). Anyway, we weren’t there for long, anxious as we were on our first day of the trip to get out of Pennsylvania and off to our first stop in Washington, D.C. that night.

In the years since, I’ve visited Baltimore with the family when Scott and Sarah lived in Arlington (or was it Alexandria?), and Aimee and I visited Camden Yards in the summer of 2003, during our third baseball road trip, where this photo comes from. I know there’s more to Baltimore than the Inner Harbor, and more to Maryland than Baltimore, but it will have to wait until the next road trip.
