Notice anything?

cbartlett.jpgThe poster for the new film Charlie Bartlett brought to mind another brightly colored high-contrast portrait with words on sunglasses lenses, the cover of Black Grape’s 1995 album It’s Great When You’re Straight… Yeah.

bgrape.jpgThat album cover seems to have inspired other work even more directly, and I’m sure the idea wasn’t an original one, even in 1995, but when I saw the Bartlett posters on the street a few weeks ago, I couldn’t help but think of Shaun Ryder, Bez, and – who could forget – a song called “Kelly’s Heroes.”

I’ll be seeing the film this weekend, and I’ll report back if “Reverend Black Grape” or “A Big Day in the North” show up in the soundtrack. Somehow I doubt it.
