Bookeaters and buckets of cash

vowell_richter.jpgOur busy weekend continued on Saturday night with the Revenge of the Book-Eaters event at Royce Hall at UCLA. It was a great event in a beautiful space, even if it involved Andy Richter wearing only a vest and leather pants. And a wig. Channeling Jim Morrison. Or maybe that’s why it was great. Anyway, it was an evening of words and music, with the music coming from the Mountain Goats, Jenny Lewis, and Aimee Mann, though, sadly, not Mark Kozelek, as advertised. The words came from Andy Richter, Dave Eggers, and Sarah Vowell, plus (as a last-minute replacement for Jake Gyllenhaal) the excellent John Krasinski from The Office, who read a story written by a student at one of the many 826 writing centers for which the whole evening was raising funds.

Dave Eggers came around with a bucket during the show, asking for donations and offering a hug to anyone who donated $20 or more; we enjoyed watching the variety of polite hugs, literary-crush hugs, and man-hugs that happened before us. And yes, we gave some cash and I took the hug for the family; Aimee was too shy.

Afterwards, we enjoyed a stroll around Westwood and some insane chipwiches at Diddy Riese.
