Out of Control Room

June 7th, 2004 · No Comments

More people than I’ve ever seen at work showed up for a screening of Control Room tonight, which was heartening, but overkill. We seat about 200, and at the moment we announced we were sold out, the line of people still waiting to get in was all the way around the main floor perimeter, out the door, up the ramp, and onto the sidewalk. It’s actually much better than if only twenty or thirty get turned away, because only a few people took it personally tonight, instead of a small mob as it often is. The film opens in four days locally, so people didn’t have much ground to be irate; the police officer we’d requested also helped out just by being there.

In other news, The Believer‘s June 2004 Music Issue (with cd) came today, and the disc is great. It’s got bands I know and love (Beulah), bands I’ve heard of but never heard (The Walkmen, TV on the Radio), and bands I’ve never heard of, period (The Books, Buried Beds, The Gossip). The opening track from the Walkmen, “The Rat,” is now my new favorite song.
