Teitur Tots

We headed to the Paradise tonight for a double-shot of sensitive foreigners, as Teitur opened for Alexi Murdoch. I had only heard of Murdoch from Aaron’s friend who drove us to the airport last year when we were heading to SxSW, and had never heard his music. Teitur I hadn’t heard of at all, but on both counts, we were pleasantly surprised. Teitur is definitely the first artist I’ve seen from the Faroe Islands, and not surprisingly, his voice sounded not unlike Sondre Lerche – we’ll continue Nordic Singers Month when we see him on May 12th. Teitur had great songs, a nice presence, and frustratingly good lyrics and pronunciation for someone singing in a second or third language.

Alexi Murdoch, who spoke like Clive Owen, sang like Nick Drake, and looked not unlike Jesus, was also a nice surprise, one of those artists whose performance, in the right setting, just works, whether or not you’ve heard the music before or would even like it if you bought the album. And speaking of his album, the Herald had something interesting to say about Murdoch today – plus you can check out his classic Jesus pose.

Paradise Guy was there, as he should be, but instead of spying from his perch next to the sound board above the bar, he was smack in the front and center, taking notes from five feet away. Didn’t need his binoculars this time.
