Hooray for “Seabiscuit”!

All in all, the Oscars were un-surprising, which was a little sad, given the opportunities in the Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress categories for some interesting decisions. I’m happy for Sean Penn, and my disgust at Ren?e Zellweger’s totally undeserved victory for “Cold Mountain” was made up for by the fact that the trite trash that is “Seabiscuit” got firmly shut out. I didn’t think “Cold Mountain” was much good, but I was blown away that that crummy horse movie got nominated. And I don’t think it was just the oft-interrupted and uniformly poor presentation of the film that we saw at the Stoughton Cinema Pub that soured me; I think it was the heavy-handed and joyless tone of the film. So now we can move on from “The Lord of the Rings” – how lucky for everyone that the third movie was a step up from the second, and not the third leg in a downward spiral from the promise of the first film. Everyone’s breathing a sigh of relief that the third film was able to sustain the weight of the awards given to the series as a whole. Billy Crystal was entertaining enough, aside from that weird Pete Rose tangent that went on a little too long, but why were there no interesting speeches? Everyone seemed a little too happy with themselves, or maybe it’s just that everyone knew exactly what to expect.
